- 1871 - Ku Klux Klan trials began in the federal court in Oxford, Mississippi.

- 1874 - USA: 1st Lifesaving Medal awarded (Lucian Clemons).

- 1895 - Caroline Willard Baldwin becomes 1st female to get a PhD from an American University (Cornell University).

- 1947 - Bugsy Siegel (American gangster) shot dead in Beverly Hills at 41. He created casinos in Las Vegas.

- 1967 - USA: Muhammad Ali convicted of refusing induction into armed services.
