- 1806 - Andrew Jackson (US President) kills Charles Dickinson in a duel after Dickinson had accused Jackson's wife of bigamy.

- 1848 - Mexico ratifies treaty giving New Mexico, California & some parts of Nevada, Utah, Arizona & Colorado to USA.

- 1868 - 'Decoration Day' observed for the first time in US, later called Memorial Day.

- 1896 - Henry Wells hits a cyclist in NYC, the incident resulted as the 1st car accident.
